What is low power mode?
If you activate Low Power Mode on your iPhone or iPad, the battery will last longer before requiring a recharge. However, certain features may take longer to update or complete and some tasks may not function properly until Low Power Mode is disabled or your device is charged to at least 80%.
Apple detail how Low Power Mode reduces or affects features on your device:
5G (except for video streaming) on iPhone 12 models1
Auto-Lock (defaults to 30 seconds)
Display brightness
Display refresh rate (limited up to 60 Hz) on iPhone and iPad models with ProMotion display2
Some visual effects
iCloud Photos (paused temporarily)
Automatic downloads
Email fetch
Background app refresh
When activating Low Power Mode, the battery icon and percentage in the status bar will appear yellow. Once your iPhone or iPad has been charged to 80% or more, Low Power Mode will switch off automatically.
Creating the automation:
Open the Shortcuts application
Create a new Automation using the Automation tab.
Scroll down to Battery Level
Next set your threshold to 20% and select Falls Below.
Hit next when done.
Search for the Set Low Power Mode and add the action.

Now you could stop here and save the Automation, or add a nice touch to speak Switching on low power.
Once you’ve added anything else to the Automation, select Next.
The final stage is to remember to switch off Ask before running.
You now have a convenient automation that will activate low power mode when your device’s battery drops below 20%. Please note that low power mode will be disabled once your device reaches 80% or higher. However, you can create another automation to turn off low power mode once it reaches your desired threshold. Simply create a new automation and set the threshold, making sure to select “Rises above”.
Hopefully, you’ve found creating this automation useful, if you did please reach out for anything you’d like me to cover in the future.
